My Story: How Ibogaine Found Me
In 1989, I received a call from a friend I had met in New York City when he was selling his wife’s earrings and I was selling my crafted rings; he was an alcoholic and had just heard about something called ibogaine, a powerful alkaloid from the African iboga shrub that some people were using to interrupt addiction. He asked if I had heard of it, and I could not stop thinking about all of the people ibogaine therapy might help.
In early March of 1993, I flew to Yaoundé, Cameroon, in search of ibogaine, imagining I would travel into the southern Cameroon rainforest and connect with pygmies who might choose me to carry iboga medicine and ibogaine treatment to people in the Western world. Naively, that was my plan—yet what unfolded instead was an unexpected series of synchronistic events that completely changed the direction of my life
A Synchronistic Discovery in Cameroon
Through those synchronicities, I found myself knocking on the door of the organic chemistry department at a local university, a place where thousands of students were walking around without books and where professors had not been paid for months. A man opened the door, his face full of surprise when I asked if he knew where I could find ibogaine.
He told me that he had spent the previous year and a half perfecting the extraction process for isolating ibogaine from the Tabernanthe iboga shrub, the sacred plant at the heart of traditional Bwiti ceremonies and modern ibogaine therapy. He then escorted me to an old wooden chest and took out a small bottle of fine white powder labeled “13 grams of ibogaine HCL,” the beginning of my long path with ibogaine-assisted treatment and psycho-spiritual work.
Early Ibogaine Therapy and Protocols
Days later I was on my way back to the United States with that ibogaine, and only a couple of family members and friends knew what I had brought home. On the very day I arrived, a client of a therapist friend handed her a chapter from the out-of-print book The Healing Journey by Claudio Naranjo and asked if she had ever heard of ibogaine.
The 66-year-old gentleman had a facial tick and wondered if ibogaine therapy might help address the underlying issue, and the chapter he shared—“Ibogaine: Fantasy and Reality”—documented several directive, lower-dose therapeutic sessions with ibogaine. The information in that chapter gave a small group of us what we needed to begin exploring, creating, and refining ibogaine protocols for both therapeutic and psycho-spiritual purposes.
Over the next fifteen and a half years, I conducted about 750 ibogaine sessions, including addiction-interruption treatments and psycho-spiritual iboga journeys, always emphasizing preparation, set and setting, and integration. In the years that followed, I referred close to 1,000 more people to other ibogaine providers and trained doctors and ex-addicts who went on to open ibogaine centers around the world.
Where My Work Is Now
As I move into a new phase of my life and practice, I feel called to focus again on more therapeutic and psycho-spiritual ibogaine treatments, where the intention is not only addiction interruption but deep insight, emotional healing, and reconnection with one’s own inner guidance. My work now centers on offering my expertise in ibogaine treatment together with careful preparation and reintegration support for individuals who want to deepen, clarify, and enrich their life experience through this powerful medicine.
