My Story
In 1989, I received a call from a friend who I had met in New York City when he was selling his wife’s earrings and I was selling my crafted rings. He was an alcoholic, had heard about something called Ibogaine, and he called me to ask if I had heard of it. I couldn’t stop thinking about all of the people it could help and in early March of 1993 I flew to Yaounde, Cameroon, in search of ibogaine. Naively, I was prepared to travel to the southern Cameroon rainforest and connect with the pygmies to see if they would choose me to become the harborer of ibogaine to reach people in the western world. Needless to say, that isn’t what happened.
As a result of a series of synchronistic events I found myself knocking on the door of the organic chemistry department at a university where thousands of students were walking about without books and where professors had not been paid for months. A man opened the door and his face filled with surprise when I asked him if he knew where I could find ibogaine. He told me that he had spent the previous year and a half perfecting the extraction process for isolating ibogaine from the Tabernanthe iboga shrub. He then escorted me to an old wooden chest and took out a small bottle of fine white powder, which read “13 grams of ibogaine HCL”.
Days later I was on my way back to the US. Only a couple family members and friends knew about my return with ibogaine. Yet, the very day I arrived was the day a client of a therapist friend gave her a chapter from the out-of-print book called The Healing Journey by Claudio Naranjo and asked her if she had heard anything about ibogaine. The 66-year-old gentleman had a facial tick and wondered if ibogaine therapy may help address the underlying issue. The chapter, called “Ibogaine: Fantasy and Reality”, documents several directive lower dose therapeutic sessions with ibogaine. The information from this chapter enabled a group of us to immediately explore, create and refine protocols to share ibogaine for therapeutic and psycho-spiritual purposes.
Over the course of fifteen and a half years, I conducted about 750 sessions, including addiction-interruption treatments. I spent the next several years referring close to 1,000 more people to other ibogaine providers. During that time, I also trained doctors and ex-addicts who opened ibogaine centers throughout the world.
As I move into a new phase in my life, I feel a pull to focus again on the more therapeutic and psycho-spiritual treatments where I’m able to offer my expertise in ibogaine treatment along with my knowledge of reintegration with individuals who are looking to deepen and enrich their life experience.
